When is the right time?

If you're expecting, you've probably already started thinking about all the big things: the nursery, the hospital bag, tiny clothes that somehow seem too small even for a newborn, and everything else that comes with getting ready for baby.

But somewhere in that giant pregnancy to-do list, you may be wondering:

When should I actually schedule my maternity pictures?

The short answer? Don't wait until the last minute.

The sweet spot for maternity pictures

Most maternity sessions are best planned for around 29 to 36 weeks of pregnancy.

This is usually the stage where your belly is beautifully showing, but you're still comfortable enough to walk, change outfits, and enjoy your session without feeling like you're carrying a full-sized watermelon everywhere you go.

Of course, every pregnancy is different. Some moms show earlier, some later, and some feel amazing well into their third trimester. Your photographer can help you choose a timeframe that works best for you.

When should I actually book my session?

This is where I recommend planning ahead.

I'd suggest reaching out around your second trimester, ideally somewhere around 20 to 24 weeks.

You don't necessarily need to have your exact session date picked out that early, but getting on your photographer's calendar gives you more options.

Pregnancy has a funny way of making time move very quickly. One minute you're announcing your pregnancy, and the next you're wondering why your baby shower is next weekend and why you haven't packed your hospital bag yet.

And if you're hoping for a specific photographer, weekend date, location, or time of day, waiting until you're 30+ weeks can leave you with fewer options.

What if I'm already 30 weeks?

Don't panic.

If you're already well into your third trimester and haven't booked maternity pictures yet, it's still worth asking!

There may still be an opening that works for you. Just don't put it off much longer, especially if you're hoping to have your session before you're too uncomfortable.

What if my baby comes early?

This is another reason I recommend not waiting until the very end of pregnancy.

Your photographer can help you choose a session date that gives you a little breathing room before your due date.

And remember, your due date is an estimate, not a reservation your baby has to keep.

Babies are famously terrible at following calendars.

What should I wear?

You don't need to have your entire outfit figured out before booking. I also have a large client closet that I've grown so that the guesswork is taken out.

Your photographer can usually help you decide what colors, styles, and outfits will photograph beautifully and fit the look you're going for.

Whether you want something soft and simple, elegant and dramatic, or completely focused on that beautiful baby bump, your maternity session should feel like you.
