What to Wear for Your Outdoor Fall Family Photos in Southeast Texas

Fall family photos are about capturing the people you love most, the personalities that make your family yours, and the little moments you’ll want to remember long after your babies aren’t babies anymore. But before we get to the snuggles, giggles, and perfectly imperfect moments, there’s one question almost every family asks:

“What in the world are we all going to wear?”

If you’re planning outdoor fall family photos in Southeast Texas, I have a little advice for you. Put down the beige sweaters, step away from the matching white shirts, and let’s talk COLOR!

Let's talk options!

1. Neutrals Are Out. Bold Colors Are In!

Okay, maybe neutrals aren’t completely out, but they don’t have to be the star of the show!

Fall family photos are the perfect opportunity to embrace rich, beautiful colors that bring your images to life. Think less head-to-toe beige and more personality, depth, and color that makes your family stand out against the gorgeous fall scenery.

Some of my favorite colors for fall family photography include:

  • Deep burgundy and wine: Rich, classic, and beautiful in outdoor settings.
  • Mustard yellow and golden tones: Perfect for adding warmth and a little sunshine to your images.
  • Forest green and emerald: Rich colors that photograph beautifully among trees and greenery.
  • Rust and burnt orange: Traditional fall colors that never have to feel boring.
  • Navy and royal blue: Timeless choices that pair well with warmer fall shades.
  • Plum and deep purple: A fun way to add something unexpected to your family's outfits.
  • Hot pink and brighter jewel tones: For families who want their photos to feel vibrant, joyful, and full of personality.

You don't have to choose just one! In fact, mixing several complementary colors can make your family photos feel more natural and visually interesting.

And remember, we live in Southeast Texas. Our fall weather doesn't always cooperate with the cozy sweater weather we see on Pinterest. Choose colors and fabrics that work for our warmer temperatures, too!

2. Coordinate Your Outfits Instead of Matching

Gone are the days when everyone needed to wear the exact same color and style. Your family has different personalities, and your outfits can reflect that!

Instead of putting everyone in jeans and a white shirt, choose a color palette with three or four coordinating colors.

For example, you might pair a burgundy dress with a navy button-down, mustard accents, and denim. Or mix forest green, rust, cream, and dark blue throughout the family.

The goal is to look like you belong together without looking like you all shopped from the same rack.

A little variety makes a big difference. Mix patterns with solids, pair different textures together, and let each family member wear something that feels comfortable and true to their personality.

Just try to avoid having everyone wear a busy pattern at the same time. If one person wears a bold floral dress or plaid shirt, let the other outfits complement it rather than compete with it.

3. Start With Mom's Outfit

If you're a mom, here's your permission slip to pick your outfit first!

I know how it goes. You find something for your husband, something for each kid, and by the time you get around to yourself, you're left wondering what on earth you're supposed to wear.

Let's flip that around.

Choose something you feel beautiful and comfortable wearing. A flowy dress, a fun floral print, a rich jewel tone, or a skirt with movement can all photograph beautifully during an outdoor family session.

Once you've chosen your outfit, pull colors from it to coordinate everyone else's clothing.

If your dress has burgundy, pink, and hints of mustard, those colors can become the starting point for your family's palette.

And please, don't choose something just because you think it will look good in pictures. Choose something that makes you feel like yourself. When you feel comfortable and confident, it shows!

4. Dress the Kids Like Kids

I love a beautiful family portrait, but I also want to capture the little personalities that make your family special.

If your little boy hates stiff dress shoes, let's find another option. If your daughter wants to twirl every five seconds, a dress with movement might be perfect. If your kids are happiest running around outside, make sure their outfits allow them to do exactly that.

For outdoor fall family pictures, consider:

Dresses with movement for little girls.

Button-down shirts or textured polos for boys.

Suspenders, bows, or simple accessories for a little extra personality.

Boots, loafers, or clean, coordinating sneakers.

Layers that can be removed if our Southeast Texas weather decides it's still summer.

The best outfits are the ones your children can move, play, and snuggle in comfortably. We're making memories, not auditioning for a department store catalog!

5. Don't Forget the Little Details

Sometimes it's the smallest details that make an outfit feel finished.

Pay attention to shoes, belts, jewelry, hair accessories, and even socks if they might show in your photos. These details don't have to be fancy or expensive. They just need to work with the overall look.

A few other things to keep in mind:

Avoid large logos and graphics that distract from your faces.

Be mindful of neon colors, which can cast unwanted color onto skin.

Iron or steam clothing before your session.

Make sure shirts aren't too tight or too loose.

Choose shoes that work with our outdoor location.

Bring a backup outfit for little ones if spills or accidents are a possibility.

And please, don't feel like you need to buy an entirely new wardrobe for your session! Start by looking through your closets. You might already have the perfect pieces to build around.

6. Your Family Doesn't Have to Figure It Out Alone!

This is the part I really want you to remember: I include a style guide with your family session to help you plan outfits for the entire family.

You don't have to spend hours scrolling Pinterest, guessing which colors look good together, or trying to coordinate five different people on your own.

Your style guide is there to help you pull everything together, from choosing a color palette to coordinating individual outfits. It gives you a starting point so you can feel confident about what everyone will wear before session day arrives.

And if you're still unsure, that's okay! Planning your family's outfits should be an enjoyable part of preparing for your session, not another thing to stress about.

My goal is to make your outdoor family photography experience feel easy and enjoyable from beginning to end.

7. Think About Where We'll Be Taking Your Photos

Your outfits should complement the setting without blending into it.

For outdoor fall family sessions in Port Neches, Beaumont, Nederland, Lumberton, Silsbee, and the surrounding Southeast Texas area, we may be working with green trees, open fields, golden grasses, or natural wooded backdrops.

Rich colors can add beautiful contrast to these settings, especially when paired with a few softer coordinating tones.

Think about how the colors will work together as a whole. You want your family to be the focus of the images, with the setting adding to the story rather than stealing the show.

And don't worry if our version of fall looks a little different from the rest of the country. We can create beautiful fall family photos right here in Southeast Texas, even when the leaves haven't turned and the temperatures are still hanging on to summer!

Let's Make This Year's Family Photos Your Favorite Yet!

The best family photos aren't about everyone wearing the perfect outfit or getting every hair in place. They're about preserving this season of life, exactly as it is right now.

The missing front teeth. The little hands reaching for yours. The way your toddler insists on being held. The way your big kids still lean into you when they think nobody is looking.

Those are the things you'll want to remember.

So embrace the bold colors, choose outfits that feel like your family, and let go of the pressure to make everything perfect.

And remember, you don't have to plan it all alone. Your included style guide will help you coordinate everyone's outfits so you can spend less time worrying about what to wear and more time looking forward to your session.

If you're ready to plan your outdoor fall family photography session in Southeast Texas, I'd love to help you create images your family will treasure for years to come.
